'Lincoln' review: Daniel Day-Lewis is mesmerizing as 16th US president

LOS ANGELES

As the Civil War rages on, Lincoln is in the middle of another political battle -- to abolish slavery.

Daniel is flawless as Abraham Lincoln; he's just mesmerizing to watch. From what I've seen so far this year, it's his Oscar to lose.

Sally Field gives it everything she's got as Mary Todd Lincoln. She even gained 25 pounds to look every inch of the first lady.

The film is ripe with good performances, but it's the way it's told, in part thanks to a screenplay by Tony Kushner, that makes it so fascinating.

You see how the politics of the 1860s still relate to the political world today.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and that's not easy. i got a little lost, but you get the gist.

Spielberg delivers a thought-provoking, educational and entertaining film involving courage, determination and sheer guts.

"Lincoln" is rated PG-13. It's in limited release this weekend and goes wide next weekend.
