Anne Hathaway went to some serious measures for her upcoming "Les Miserables" role as Fantine - eating nearly nothing to shed 25 pounds.

The actress, 30, told Vogue in the magazine's December 2012 issue that in preparing for the prestigious role, she lost 10 pounds after undergoing a strict cleanse. Following that, the actress lived off of only two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day - losing another 15 pounds in two weeks.

"I had to be obsessive about it - the idea was to look near death," she told Vogue magazine's December issue. "Looking back on the whole experience - and I don't judge it in any way - it was definitely a little nuts.."

Hathaway endured a number of tough scenes during filming - Fantine has har her hair cut off and her teeth yanked out. But the Oscar-nominated actress explained how singing the film's popular ballad "I Dreamed a Dream" was the most challenging.

"A few weeks before we filmed it, I realized how I was going to have to sing it, and that it wasn't going to be pretty," Hathaway said. "If I went for sounding beautiful while looking like this tragic wreck, it would be ridiculous. And I saw an opportunity, because of the nature of film, to just go for it and let it be alive and present and raw."

In the film, Hathaway's character Fantine is fired from her factory job and sells her necklace, her hair, her teeth and finally, her body, so she can continue to send money to a nasty innkeeper and his wife who are taking care of her young daughter Cosette, played by Amanda Seyfried.

Russell Crowe also stars in the film as Javert, the nemesis to Hugh Jackman's character Jean Valjean. The pair appear in the film - which is helmed by Tom Hooper, director of the Oscar-winning film "The King's Speech" - alongside Seyfried, Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. Vogue's December 2012 issue hits stands on November 20. "Les Miserables" is set for release on Dec. 25, 2012 - Watch the trailer below.
