OTRC: Liza Minnelli set to guest star and sing on 'Smash'

Broadway legend Liza Minnelli has officially been added to the long list of guest stars for the second season of "Smash."

The 66-year-old will appear in an episode of NBC's musical series called "The Surprise Party," which is set to air in spring 2013. Minnelli will also sing an original song with series' star Christian Borle, who plays Tom Levitt on the show. The song was written by the show's composer and lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

"Liza Minnelli is the essence of a multi-talented, singular show business sensation, particularly for her extraordinary contributions to Broadway," Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. "So what could be more fitting than to have her legendary talent on a show that celebrates a world Liza has dazzled for decades? I had the pleasure of working with Liza when we restored her landmark television special 'Liza With a Z' at Showtime, and to see her artistry up close and personal is a thing to behold."

Minnelli is one of the rare performers who has earned an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award. Minnelli, the daughter of Hollywood legend Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, won an Oscar for playing Sally Bowles in "Cabaret." Younger audiences might know Minnelli for her recurring role on "Arrested Development" as Lucille or her brief appearance in "Sex and The City 2" where she sang a cover of Beyonce's "Single Ladies."

The second season of "Smash" will premiere on February 5 at 10 p.m. on NBC. The show, which also stars Katharine McPhee and Debra Messing, has been revamped a bit since its first season.

The show also got rid of a few characters in favor of bringing in new ones and will have some high-profile guest stars like Academy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson, "Law & Order" actor and former "Rent" star Jesse L. Martin, Nikki Blonsky of the musical film "Hairspray" and "Will & Grace" actor Sean Hayes.
