Southwest Airlines and Sea World teamed up to fly the 60 orphaned animals from the East Coast to the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter near San Diego. A shelter spokesperson said the animals were facing euthanization at the New York and New Jersey animal shelters that lost power after the storm struck last month.
The shelter says it will get the animals spayed or neutered and vaccinated before offering them up for adoption.
The flight crew and veterinarians volunteered their time to help the operation. Also, the ASPCA has opened a 20,000-square-foot shelter for displaced pets in New York. This was made possible by a $500,000 donation by celebrity chef Rachel Ray.
The ASPCA has helped nearly 16,000 animals in Sandy-hit areas by operating mobile clinics and distributing pet supplies.
