LA Auto Show steals Christmas shopping spotlight

LOS ANGELES

Showing itself off in bold yellow is an ultimate version of an ultimate Mercedes-Benz, the 2014 SLS AMG Black Series.

"This is what you get when we let our engineers just go wild and crazy," said Rob Moran of Mercedes-Benz. That's what we get when we get a black series, 622 horsepower. I think when it comes to the holiday wish list, it definitely falls in the naughty category."

German cars are widely hailed for their performance. Porsche has its own separate hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center full of high-speed horsepower. It's the largest display Porsche does anywhere in the world.

But don't forget the British, the Aston Martins preferred by the likes of rock stars and James Bond are always crowd favorites as are the hot Bentley models.

And Jaguar is showing off the most powerful sedan they've ever sold, the 2014 Jaguar XFR-S.

Like your fast cars Asian style? The Lexus LFA and Nissan GT-R do Japan proud and can burn up a race track with the best of them.

It's not just the import brands that have a lock on all the performance. Rest assured, if you come to the LA Auto Show, you're going to see a lot of American muscle too.

The Dodge Viper is back after a brief hiatus meaner and faster than ever.

Chevrolet's in the horsepower game too and longtime rival Ford is talking big numbers.

"It doesn't get any better than a vehicle that delivers 662 horsepower," said Angie Kozleski of Ford Motor Company.

Among all the Mustangs on display, the Ford Mustang GT 500's have that magic touch started by the late Carroll Shelby all those years ago.

"It's more than just the power underneath the hood,' said Kozleski. "It's got some great interior features like the Recaro seats. It's got technology in there. It handles well. It's got great brakes. It drives well. It's the entire package."

The hotter cars at the LA Auto Show obviously won't be on most people's actual shopping lists but they're most certainly the ones people want to see and grab lots of pictures of.
