Dane DeHaan, formerly of the show "In Treatment," will play Harry Osborn in the sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man," director Marc Webb has confirmed.
The new film, officially titled "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," is the second installment in Webb's trilogy that is based on the hit Marvel comic series. DeHaan joins fellow newcomers Jamie Foxx, who will play Spider-Man's enemy Electro and alter ego Max Dillon, and Shailene Woodley, who will portray Mary Jane Watson, a spokesperson for distributor Sony Pictures confirmed to OTRC.com.
"Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan," he wrote on Twitter on Monday, December 3, alongside a photo of the 25-year-old.
"To say I'm excited is an understatement. #HarryOsborn #ASM2," DeHaan Tweeted back.
In the Marvel comics, her character is a love interest of both Osborn and Spider-Man's own alter ego, Peter Parker. Andrew Garfield reprises his role as the superhero and Emma Stone returns as his other love interest, Gwen Stacy.
DeHaan played Jesse D'Amato on the HBO series "In Treatment" and Timbo on several episodes of the cable network's vampire drama "True Blood." He also had parts in movies such as "Jack and Diane," "Lawless" and the recently-released "Lincoln." Webb said in a statement released by Sony Pictures that DeHaan is "an exciting and extraordinary young actor and he is a fantastic addition to our cast."
Woodley is known for her roles in the ABC Family series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and the 2011 movie "The Descendents," in which she played the daughter of George Clooney's character.
In the Marvel comics, Osborn begins as Parker's friend but he later takes over his father's villain role of The Green Goblin and sets off to destroy Spider-Man, who he blames for his dad's death, as well as the people he loves. James Franco played Osborn in Sam Raimi's previous "Spider-Man" trilogy.
"The Amazing Spider-Man" was released earlier this summer and made more than $752 million worldwide. The sequel hits theaters on May 2, 2014, and will be available in 3D.
