Perry was honored as a "Trevor Hero" due to her extensive work with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community. The singer was recognized for empowering youth and increasing visibility and understanding.

The "Teenage Dream" singer explained why this honor means to much to her.

"I'm really happy about it - for myself, I hope to be an inspiration," Perry explained prior to the event. "Hopefully, you can look at the way I lead my life, some of the ethics, and the constant integrity like to imply, and be inspired by that. And my message - especially 'Firework' - It's been kind of my mantra."

Perry also thanked the organization for all of their work, and gave her own message to LGBTQ youth.

"I hope all LGBTQ youth know that they are as valuable as anyone else, that they are amazing and unique, and make the world a more vibrant place," Perry said in her acceptance speech. "Trevor's life-saving, life-affirming work helps youth find the future they deserve. I want every young person to choose to have a tomorrow and to dream for the future."

The Trevor Project aims to "save young lives through its free and confidential lifeline, in-school workshops and educational materials." The event, which was sponsored by The Trevor Project and Audi of America, featured a number of performers, including Ryan Teddar, Jessica Sanchez, Samantha Ronson, Sara Bareilles, Matthew Morrison and more.
