'Gangnam Style' El Monte lifeguards rehired by city, then resign

EL MONTE, Calif.

The lifeguards produced a video parody of Korean pop song "Gangnam Style" on the premises of a city pool while wearing their city lifeguard uniforms. They were fired for unauthorized use of city facilities.

Their firing brought an uproar in the community at city council meetings. Supporters felt the punishment was too severe.

One of the lifeguards confirmed to Eyewitness News that 13 of the 14 lifeguards involved in the controversy submitted resignation letters.

City officials had been meeting with the lifeguards individually to discuss whether they wanted to return to their jobs or resign.
