Justin Bieber was the target of a grisly murder plot, police say.

Dana Martin, a 45-year-old inmate at the Southern New Mexico Corrections Facility, is accused of targeting the singer in a gruesome plan that involved castrating then murdering the teenage singer, one of the most popular young pop stars in the world.

Martin, who has an image of Bieber tattooed on his leg, was sentenced to 978 years in jail for rape and murder in 2000. The felon reportedly attempted to contact the singer, and when no response was received, masterminded a plan to kill him, according to ABC News, which carried the report.

Former inmate Mark Staake and his nephew, Tanner Ruane, had traveled to Vermont on November 14, with the intention of later reaching New York, in order to carry out the incarcerated man's plan, police told the network.

The pair intended to catch Bieber in between his November 28 and November 29 Madison Square concerts, but the plot was foiled when they took a wrong exit and ended up in custody over outstanding warrants.

Bieber's manager Scooter Braun came forward and issued a statement regarding the grisly murder plot, telling Us Weekly: "We take every precaution to protect and insure the safety of Justin and his fans."

The singer is known for hit songs such as "Baby," "Boyfriend" and "Beauty and a Beat," as well as his popular big-screen documentary, "Never Say Never." The singer is also gearing up to perform at Hot 99.5's Jingle Ball.
