Lancaster mayor wants to shame retailers that don't go after shoplifters

LANCASTER, Calif.

In 90 days, Parris plans to publicly announce a list of stores in the city that do not prosecute shoplifters. The mayor said he won't publish the names of small businesses, but he'll focus instead oN big retail chains.

If the stores change their policies during the 90 days, their names will be crossed off the list. The mayor says crime is contagious, and stores have a responsibility to the community.

But some retailers claim the cost of prosecution sometimes outweighs the loss caused by shoplifting.
