OTRC: 'Gangnam Style' success: YouTube star PSY's 15 career highlights

The "Gangnam Style" YouTube video made South Korean rapper PSY an international star in 2012.

After his dance music clip went viral in the summer, he got to appear on popular television programs, sang with top artists such as Madonna and even performed for the president of the United States. On December 21, the YouTube video for "Gangnam Style" broke a world record to become the first clip to pass the 1 billion mark in total views.

The colorful, fast-pased clip has made PSY, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang and whose stage name is short for "PSYcho," a global superstar.

August 2012:

October 2012:

7. Contestants of "Dancing With The Stars" perform "Gangnam Style" on the ABC show. "Dancing With The Stars" pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy told OTRC.com in November that the group performance on the ABC show was "amazing," "freaking crazy" and marked an "historic event" for the series.

November 2012:

9. PSY joins MC Hammer on stage to close the 2012 American Music Awards.

"My life is divided into two pieces - before 'Gangnam Style' and after 'Gangnam Style,'" he told OTRC.com at the event. "I try to enjoy it and I'm not gonna think about anything about next step or something like that. I'm enjoying today and I gotta go many more countries from now on because it's still no. 1 in so many countries so I gotta go there and at least gotta say 'Hi' and 'Thank you,' so it's going to take a while."

MC Hammer congratulated PSY on his latest YouTube record, Tweeting: "@psy_oppa Congratulations !!! You made history !!! I Billion Views !!!!"

The event also features performances from Diana Ross, Demi Lovato, "Smash" star Megan Hilty, Chris Mann and "American Idol" alum Scotty McCreery and airs on the cable channel TNT on Friday, December 21.

Did you know? PSY spent a semester at Boston University in 1997 and later attended Berklee College of Music before returning to South Korea, where he recorded his first album in 2001, according to the official BU website.
