Chile volcano roars to life; red alert issued

COPAHUE, Chile

The volcano near the border with Argentina began spewing ash and gas on Sunday. The red alert is the most severe in Chile's warning system.

The cloud was already about a mile high as of Monday morning. No evacuation orders have been issued.

The last significant eruption occurred from July to October back in 2000. That caused some damage and mudslides, and spurred evacuations.
