The hit ABC Family series "Switched at Birth" is returning for a second season, and it's bringing the drama - and a new series regular.
The season 2 premiere of show, which tells the story of two teen girls who discover that they were accidentally switched at birth, is set to air on Monday, January 7.
Katie Leclerc, who plays Daphne Vasquez in the family drama, explained how the show has developed since season one.
"I think that the show has stayed fundamentally the same," Leclerc explained to OTRC.com. "The characters are the focus of the story, and the story is about these families that have to come together, because they don't have an option. And I think that if you look at the characters individually, they've matured, but I think as a cohesive unit we're still sort of close to our roots."
In the show, Bay Kennish, played by Vanessa Marano, grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, played by Leclerc, lost her hearing as a child due to a case of meningitis and grew up with a single mother in a poor neighborhood. The second season depicts the effect of the verdict in the baby switch trial on the Kennish and Vasquez families.
While Leclerc promises that the show has stayed "true to its roots," the series is set to see one big change in the upcoming season - Gilles Marini joining the cast as a series regular. The actor, who recently competed in ABC's hit dancing series "Dancing with the Stars," will reprise his role as Angelo, Kennish's father, in the drama series.
Marano, 20, acts as the daughter to Marini's character, and the starlet had plenty to say about the "Sex and the City" actor officially joining the cast.
"Never in my entire life have I had so many people go, 'Oh my God, Gilles Marini is on your show? He is the most attractive, sexiest, beautiful man,' and I'm like yeah, he's my dad," Marano explained. "Never have I been in a situation where it's just like women just want to talk about how unbelievably hot they are for the guy playing your father - and I've had attractive fathers, mind you."
The first season finale of the drama series left off with Marini's character Angelo, who is Regina Vasquez's estranged partner, making his return. Right when things seemed to be getting better, a mysterious pregnant woman named Lana arrives, asking for Angelo's whereabouts.
Leclerc offered up some minor spoilers about the mystery woman's role in the upcoming season.
"Lana makes the surprise appearance, and you know, she sticks around, as it turns out," Leclerc explained. "So we've got to deal with Angelo, and his ... mystery child? You know, what is happening? It's a big shock for the Kennish's and definitely for poor Regina who sort of thought she had her man back."
Lucas Grabeel, known for his role in the hit Disney films "High School Musical," stars in the show as Toby Kennish. Lea Thompson of "Back to the Future" and D.W. Moffett also appear as Mr. and Mrs. Kennish.
The upcoming season of the hit family drama airs on ABC Family on Monday, January 7 at 8/7 CT.
