George Lucas, creator of "Star Wars," is engaged to longtime girlfriend Mellody Hobson, OTRC.com has learned.

The 68-year-old director, writer and screenwriter has been with Hobson, the 43-year-old president of the Chicago-based investment management firm, Ariel Investments and a finance expert who has appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America," for more than six years.

A rep for his company Lucasfilm, which Lucas recently sold to the Walt Disney Company for $4.05 billion, confirmed their engagement to OTRC.com on Thursday, January 3.

The two appeared on Oprah Winfrey's interview series "Oprah's Next Chapter" a year ago, in January 2012. At the time, he was promoting his new movie "Red Tails."

Lucas and Hobson revealed on the OWN show that they had met about five years prior at a business conference.

"How else would a financial person and movie person ever be at the same place at the same time?" the director said.

When asked why they think their relationship works, Hobson told Winfrey: "I think it works because we are extraordinarily open-minded people and we are open to what the universe brings us. And I think that we didn't have preconceived ideas about what a partner should be and so we allowed ourselves to discover something that was unexpected."

Lucas, also known for the "Indiana Jones" movies, was previously married to Marcia Lou Griffin, between 1969 and 1983, and once dated singer Linda Ronstadt. He and his ex-wife adopted a daughter together and after they split, he adopted another daughter and a son.

Lucas earned two Oscar nominations for the original 1977 "Star Wars" movie, which spurred two sequels and a prequel trilogy. Lucas revealed during his announcement about the Disney-Lucasfilm deal that a new trilogy, made up of episodes 7, 8 and 9, is in the works.

Lucas was also nominated for two Oscars for his 1973 film "American Graffiti." He and Hobson have attended the Academy Awards ceremony and other Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events.

The Walt Disney Company also owns the ABC Television Network and eight local news stations, such as KABC Television, OTRC.com's parent firm.
