Charlie Sheen and Bill Murray went retro for their newest film project -- they star in the 1970s-themed R-rated comedy movie by Roman Coppola, the son of famed director Francis Ford Coppola.
The film, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" is set to hit select theaters and will also be made available as a VOD on iTunes, starting on January 8. Roman directed and wrote the screenplay for the movie, which is set in the 1970s. This marks the first big-screen leading role for Sheen in more than 10 years.
He plays Charles Swan, a womanizer whose life is turned upside down after his girlfriend, played by Katheryn Winnick, dumps him. Roman's cousin, Jason Schwartzman, plays his best friend and Murray, who has worked with him before, plays his manager. Patricia Arquette stars as his sister.
"A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" is rated R for language and some nudity. Sheen, Murray and Schwartzman sport some serious 1970s looks -- the former two have sideburns and the latter actor is seen with wild, curly hair and a full mustache and beard. The three also wear cowboy outfits in one scene, with Schwartzman's bearing a Star of David, a Jewish symbol. (see publicity photos, above)
"There's a lot of stuff in it we haven't seen Charlie do," Roman told The Los Angeles Times in late December. "He learned to speak some Spanish and Portuguese; he plays guitar. 'Giddy' is a weird word, but I'm delighted I get to be the one who puts Charlie back on the screen where he deserves to be."
Roman has previously directed music videos for The Stokes as well as Moby and Green Day. He co-wrote the 2012 film "Moonrise Kingdom" with Wed Anderson and the two teamed up with Schwartzman to pen the script for the 2007 film "The Darjeeling Limited." Murray and Schwartzman starred in both movies.
Sheen last played a leading role on the big screen in 2000, when he starred as a relationship advice columnist in the independent romantic comedy "Good Advice," which also starred Denise Richards, who would later become his wife and mother of his two daughters. The divorced in 2006.
In 2003, he began playing another womanizer, Charlie Harper, on the CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men" and was famously fired in 2011 following a meltdown. He currently stars on the FX comedy series "Anger Management."
Sheen can also be seen on the big screen in another R-rated comedy film -- "Scary Movie 5," along with Lindsay Lohan. The movie hits theaters in April.
