"The Big Bang Theory" is starting the year off right by bringing in its biggest numbers ever for the 2013 debut.

The popular CBS sitcom, which is about a pair of nerdy guys and their friends, broke two records with its first episode of the new year following a three-week hiatus, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Final ratings for Thursday night show the hit sitcom setting record highs in both total viewers and the adults 18-49 demo, according to the magazine. The show attracted more than 19 million viewers for its 2013 debut.

The show has been consistently on top in recent months, having averaged 16.2 million among adults 18-49 and 20.3 million with seven days of DVR usage throughout the month of December.

The series, which began airing in 2007, stars Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper, Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter and Kaley Cuoco. Mayim Bialik, last seen in the 1990s sitcom "Blossom," joined the show in 2010 and earned her first Emmy nod for her role as Amy Farrah Fowler.

Parsons has won two Emmys for his role in the show, and the series has been nominated a total of 18 times. In 2011, Parsons took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy for his work as Cooper.

In January 2011, it was announced that the scientific comedy had been renewed for 3 more seasons and would air until at least 2014.
