"General Hospital" fans can rejoice! Genie Francis is returning to the long-running soap opera as Laura Spencer.
ABC confirmed the news on January 8. The actress will reprise her famous role for the show's 50th anniversary.
Francis will begin appearing on the series on February 11, according to Entertainment Weekly, who first reported the news. It is not clear how long Francis will remain on the show.
"I don't know what the story is," Francis told the magazine. "I have no idea, but Frank [Valentini, the show's executive producer] is very persuasive, energetic, infectious and has a sense of fun, a positive-ness that makes you want to work for the guy. He assured me there was going to be nice stuff to play. I am choosing to believe him!"
The 50-year-old actress added that her one request was that the writers explain why her character was absent from the series. Francis began playing Laura in 1976.
She and actor Anthony Geary, who plays Luke Spencer, are best known for being part of the soap opera supercouple Luke and Laura. Francis initially left the series in 1982, but returned from 1993 to 2002. She would reprise the role a few more times on the show until 2008.
Francis recently appeared on "Young and the Restless" as Genevieve Atkinson from May 2011 to November 2012.
In other soap opera news, it was announced on Monday that "All My Children" and One Life To Live" will be revived on the Internet.
Production on both shows will begin in February, the firm said in a statement, obtained by OTRC.com on Monday, January 7. The soaps ended their broadcast runs on ABC in 2011 and January 2012 after some 40 years on the air, sparking outrage among longtime fans.
