Murder charge in toddler's chili-powder death

APPLE VALLEY, Calif.

Amanda Sorenson, 21, was charged with murder and assault causing death, according to a felony complaint. She was expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, but she was never transported from the jail to the court due to some type of mix-up.

Joilene was about a month shy of her third birthday when she died.

Deputies went to an Apple Valley home Sunday afternoon and found the 2-year-old girl suffering from a seizure after ingesting the powder. She later died at the hospital.

Sorenson, the girlfriend of the girl's father, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the child's death. She is being held on a $500,000 bail and is due in court Thursday.

Police are not saying how Joilene got the chili powder in her mouth.
