OTRC: Jimmy Kimmel beats David Letterman in ratings with earlier time slot

Jimmy Kimmel talks to OTRC.com in a December 2012 interview.

Jimmy Kimmel's new earlier time slot has paid off -- ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" has beaten fellow late-night program "The Late Show with David Letterman" for the first time.

However, the show ranked lower than NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

ABC shifted Kimmel's series to 11:35 p.m., when the latter two shows air, for the first time on Tuesday, while the news magazine program "Nightline" was moved from that time slot to 12:35 a.m. The series switch was announced in August.

The first earlier episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," which featured Jennifer Aniston as a guest and a performance from rock and ska band No Doubt, earned a 0.7 rating among adults between ages 18 and 49 and was watched by about 3.1 million viewers, marking the second-highest figures in the 10-year history of the show, which had averaged 1.9 viewers in its previous 12 a.m. time slot.

On Tuesday, CBS' "Late Show" received a 0.54 rating and was watched by 2.9 million people, while The "Tonight Show" won the time slot with a 0.86 rating and 3.3 million viewers.

Kimmel recently dissed Leno's stand-up comedy skills in an interview with Rolling Stone and said the 62-year-old "totally sold out."

Kimmel, who appears on the cover of the magazine dressed as a plumber exposing his behind, has been promoting his show's new time slot with a slew of promotional spots and pop-ins on outlets such as on OTRC.com, parent company company KABC Television and a recent NBA game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers.

This is not the first time Kimmel has taken a swipe at Leno. The comedian, who is a fan of Letterman and says he is his childhood idol, impersonated Leno on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in 2010 during the NBC late night drama involving Conan O'Brien and also slammed the host on his own talk show.
