California leads in charter school growth - study

LOS ANGELES

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools announced Tuesday that the state added 81 charter schools in the academic year that started last fall.

That pushes California's total number of publicly funded autonomous schools to more than 1,000 statewide.

The study notes that 109 new charters opened in California this school year, but 28 of them closed as well. There are now over 6,000 charter schools across the country.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
