Conrad Bain of 'Diff'rent Strokes' dies at 89

LOS ANGELES

Jennifer Bain said her father died Monday.

Bain was the kindly adoptive father of two young black brothers in "Diff'rent Strokes," which debuted on NBC in 1978. The series lasted for eight seasons, the last two on ABC.

The show was most noticed for its child actors, including Gary Coleman, who played the younger of the two brothers.

Before starring in "Diff'rent Strokes," Bain was on the feminist sitcom "Maude" as the conservative neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon.

Bain's longtime wife, Monica Sloan, died in 2009. He is survived by his three children: Jennifer, Kent and Mark.
