New LAPD surveillance system unveiled

LOS ANGELES

The cameras will cover the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley and Topanga areas. The new system will be the LAPD's only one in which the video signal is transmitted wirelessly through Verizon 4G technology.

City Councilman Dennis Zine said the system will be an important tool for police in the Topanga and West Valley Divisions to deter illegal activity. He said it will also help catch criminals after a crime has been committed.

Los Angeles City Council approved a motion by Zine to transfer $679,830 for the project.
