Denise Richards and her daughters are mourning the loss of their beloved French bulldog, Hank, who recently died at age 13.
The 41-year-old actress announced the news on her Twitter page late on Monday, January 21.
"Last night we lost our beloved Hank..I will miss him dearly,13 yrs old ..been there for me thru it all," Richards Tweeted, alongside an Instagram photo of the family's pet.
Dozens of people offered their condolences in response to her Tweet, including actress Holly Robinson Peete of "21 Jump Street" fame. A message posted on behalf of the animal rights group PETA read: "So sorry for your loss. Lots of love to u & your fam during this difficult time."
Richards, who has three daughters, including two with ex-husband Charlie Sheen, had occasionally posted photos of Hank and the family's other pets on Twitter. She and Hank were also featured on the cover of Modern Dog magazine's Fall 2011 issue.
"Thank you so much for your kind messages about Hank...it means alot to me," she Tweeted on Tuesday. "You guys are the best..so thoughtful & kind...xo."
The actresss is a longtime dog lover and has been involved in the no-kill dog sanctuary Best Friends Animal Society's efforts to help homeless pets.
Richards and Hank were featured on a 2006 episode of the reality show "The Dog Whisperer." (Watch video) The actress said in an interview posted on host Cesar Millan's website Cesar's Way in October 2012 that she once adopted a blind Chihuahua mix named Preston from the group. She also fosters rescue dogs at her house and even had a "dog room" built for her pups.
"I take in dogs that need medical care and/or surgeries in addition to senior (dogs) and moms with pups," she told the website. "Many of them get adopted, and the ones that fit in with my pack have a new home with us."
In November, Richards adopted a Labrador puppy from the North Shore Animal League during a visit to the East Coast aimed at assisting in the relief efforts of Hurricane Sandy.
