OTRC: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arteron talk 'instant' chemistry on 'Hansel & Gretel' (Video)

Jeremy Renner talks to OTRC.com about their 2013 action film 'Hansel and Gretel.' (OTRC)

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, who star as the title characters in "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," talked about their "instant chemistry" while working on the fantasy film.

"Her [Arterton] audition tape was amazing, and we spoke on the phone," Renner explained to OTRC.com's George Pennacchio. "And then, I told her kind of where I was coming from and what I was really thinking for this, for us - cause it's not really Hansel and it's not Gretel - it's a team sort of effort. Like Tommy [director] was saying, it's just the chemistry thing, it was really important - so even over the phone, I felt like we were kind of on the same page."

"Yeah, and we were very, very lucky in that the chemistry was pretty natural," Arterton continued. "I mean, sometimes you have to really work to get the chemistry right, and you have to find things, but we were really lucky. We instantaneously had that brother and sister thing. We were both sort of very open, and as Jeremy said, on the same page. We both had that banter, and we both have siblings so we could play off that and bring that in - but it really is the kind of the crux of the movie - you know, we have to believe that these two are brother and sister."

The fantasy film is a spin on the classic fairy tale and shows Hansel and Gretel as bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled "blood moon" approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.

The "Bourne Legacy" actor, 42, went on to talk about what attracts him to action roles in films.

"Well, they're just complicated, they're complex," he said. "You know, flawed heroes - I have a big place in my heart for those, because that means it's human. Even if it's a villain there's sympathy or empathy for that villain. ... I think we all understand, even if you don't understand what Hansel and Gretel was, you know, we tell it a little bit in the movie, so I think as audience members we can really kind of go on this journey with them, and they're not so separated, but they're human."

The actor has received two Oscar-nominations for his roles in films "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town." Renner, who is known for his role in "The Bourne Legacy," has also appeared in "The Avengers," "28 Weeks Later" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

Arterton, 27, has appeared in "Clash of the Titans," "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and "Quantum of Solace."
