Malibu Presbyterian Church holds 1st Sunday service in new sanctuary since 2007 fire

MALIBU, Calif.

It's the first Sunday service the church is holding since the new sanctuary was constructed.

The Canyon Fire roared through the hills of Malibu back in October 2007. The massive blaze charred more than 4,500 acres of land and destroyed more than 21 buildings, including the original Malibu Presbyterian Church, which was 63 years old.

When the church was destroyed, many community members pitched in to support the congregants.

A large dome-like tent was set up to serve as a temporary church, not far from where the brand new building stands now.

The groundbreaking was held in 2011 for the new structure, which is fire resistant and made of brick, glass and copper.
