Taye Diggs interrupted a burglary at his Los Angeles area home after he attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, January 27.
The actor was returning to his home in Studio City, California, from the award show when he saw the alleged burglar tying to enter his home shortly after 11 p.m. PT, according to KABC-Television, OTRC.com's parent company.
The suspected burglar entered the garage, which is where Diggs confronted the suspect. The alleged burglar attempted to flee, but the "Private Practice" actor tackled him and waited for police officers to respond.
Diggs' wife, actress Idina Menzel, and their child were at home at the time of the incident but were not injured.
The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Hassan Juma from Hollywood. He twisted his ankle while trying to the flee the scene. Juma was arrested at 11:20 p.m. PT and booked on a felony, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. He is currently being held on $50,000 bail.
The incident is similar to one that occurred in August with rapper and actor LL Cool J, who overpowered an intruder in his Studio City home.
Diggs was a presenter at the SAG Awards and attended the ceremony with his wife. The couple, who met while performing in the original production of "Rent" on Broadway and wed in 2003, are parents of a 3-year-old son named Walker Nathaniel Diggs.
He's likely best known for his role on "Private Practice," which recently aired its series finale. Diggs is also known for films like "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "Brown Sugar" and "Chicago." He reprised his role as Benjamin "Benny" Coffin III for the 2005 film adaptation of "Rent," which also featured Menzel in her original role.
