David Silva, 62, pleaded guilty to federal extortion and bribery charges and was sentenced to one year in federal prison. Prosecutors said he took $17,000 in bribes from a man who wanted to open a marijuana dispensary.
"Mr. Silva sold the integrity and authority of the mayor's office for his own personal gain," said United States Attorney André Birotte Jr. "Elected officials are expected to obey the law. When they don't, those officials should expect to go to prison."
The case against Silva led to a continuing federal investigation into widespread corruption in Cudahy's city government.
Angel Perales, 44, another city official involved in the bribery scheme, was sentenced two weeks ago to probation.
Former City Councilman Osvaldo Conde, 51, is set to be sentenced on Feb. 25.
