The 20-year-old man accused of breaking into the home of actors Taye Diggs and wife Idina Menzel has been charged with burglary, Los Angeles prosecutors say.
Diggs, who appears on ABC's "Private Practice," had confronted the person, Hassan Omar Juma, on Sunday after he returned to his home near Los Angeles after attending the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Menzel and their 3-year-old son was also home at the time of the alleged break-in and were not injured, according to KABC-Television, OTRC.com's parent company.
Diggs found Juma in their garage and tackled him after he tried to flee. Juma twisted his ankle in the incident. Police arrived and arrested him at 11:20 p.m. and then booked him in jail around 4:30 a.m. Juma was charged with one felony count of first degree burglary with a person present on Tuesday, January 29, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com.
Juma, who is being held on a $50,000 bond, has not commented. If convicted, he faces up to six years in state prison.
Aside from "Private Practice," which recently aired its series finale, Diggs is also known for films such as "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "Brown Sugar" and "Chicago." He and Menzel met on the set of the Broadway musical "Rent" and reprised their roles in a 2005 film.
