The average price of a gallon of gas jumped six to seven cents overnight in Southern California and 22 cents within the past week.
Analysts say there are several reasons behind the sharp increases, including the rising price of crude oil and maintenance work at California refineries.
"A lot of them are doing more maintenance for the refineries than they typically do, and so they're not at full capacity and that reduces production and that reduces supply," said Jeffrey Spring of AAA.
According to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area is at $3.98, which is up 6 cents overnight.
In Orange County, the average is $3.96, up 6 cents overnight.
In the Inland Empire, the average is $3.92, up 6 cents overnight.
In Ventura County, the average is $3.96, also up 6 cents overnight.
