Ethan Hawke is sporting a new look for his role in the off-Broadway show "Clive." The 42-year-old actor, who normally has brown hair, dyed his hair blonde his role as a rock musician named Clive in the play.
Hawke also styles his hair in a spiky way for the show and even wears eyeliner. The play is a modern day adaptation of the 1918 play "Baal." The new production is set in the 1990s and was also directed by Hawke.
"I don't know how to explain it exactly," Hawke said of his hair in a January interview with The New York Times about the play. "I didn't want to feel like me when I did this role."
"I'm trying to do that old-school, third-person thing by unlocking something as utterly superficial as my hair," he added. "I was shooting for a Bowie thing, but then I saw a picture of him after I did it, and he didn't really do his hair like this."
The show opened on February 8. The Associated Press described the play in a review as, "Visually interesting and well-acted, the dark play tells a tragic story with brittle, noirish humor and mockery."
Vincent D'Onofrio of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" fame also appears in the play as Clive's friend Doc.
Hawke, a two-time Oscar-nominee, has an upcoming role in the film "Before Midnight." The movie is a sequel to "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" and Hawke will reprise his role as Jesse from the two previous films. "Before Midnight" is set for release on May 24.
