Orca whale born at SeaWorld in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif.

The killer whale was born at 6:33 a.m. at Shamu Stadium and appeared to be healthy, according to SeaWorld. The mother, Kasatka, spent about an hour in labor.

The calf is the sixth to be born at SeaWorld - four have been born to Kasatka, who is about 37 years old. The park now has 10 killer whales. Orcas have an 18-month gestation period.

The newborn weighs 300-350 pounds and is between 6 and 7 feet long, park officials said. There is no word on the sex.

Zoological team members say the mother and calf both appear to be fine, but they will be under close observation for the next few days.
