OTRC: 'A Good Day to Die Hard' tops weekend box office with $25 million

Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney appear in a scene for the 2013 film 'A Good Day to Die Hard.' (20th Century Fox)

The Presidents Day holiday box office belongs to Bruce Willis' action film "A Good Day to Die Hard."

The film, which opened on Valentine's Day on Thursday, grossed $25 million over the holiday weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is expected to top the full Presidents Day weekend with $30 million for a five day debut of $38.3 million.

"A Good Day to Die Hard" features Bruce Willis reprising his role as John McClane. McClane attempts to rescue his son John "Jack" McClane Jr. (played by Jai Courtney) after Jack gets into trouble in Moscow. The two end up in the middle of a terrorism plot and join forces to try to stop the terrorists' plans from going forward.

In second place is last week's box office champ "Identity Thief," with $23.4 million. The R-rated film's projected Friday through Monday gross is $27.7 million for a domestic haul of $75 million through Monday, according to the magazine.

There was some controversy with the film after New York Observer critic Rex Reed commented negatively on star Melissa McCarthy's weight. McCarthy's cousin Jenny McCarthy came to the comedian's defense earlier this week and said Reed could "go to hell."

The romantic drama "Safe Haven" nabbed the No. 3 spot for the holiday box office, raking in $21.4 million for the three day weekend according to the entertainment outlet. The Nicholas Sparks film adaptation narrowly won Valentine's Day and tied with Willis' No. 1 thriller, "Die Hard," on Friday.

Former "Dancing With The Stars" pro Julianne Hough stars in "Safe Haven" as a woman with a dark past who falls in love with a widower, played by Josh Duhamel, after arriving in a North Carolina town. The film is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.

In fourth place is the animated family film "Escape From Planet Earth," which earned $16.1 million for the three day weekend. The film features the voices of Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba and Sarah Jessica Parker.

"Warm Bodies" finishes out the box office in fifth place. The film, which has been in theaters for three weeks, earned $9 million for the three-day weekend. So far, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie has grossed $50.2 million.
