'Silver Linings Playbook' wins big at Film Independent Spirit Awards

SANTA MONICA, Calif.

David O. Russell directed the film about characters battling mental illness. Russell took home best director and best screenplay honors, while Jennifer Lawrence won for best actress.

It was also a successful night for "The Sessions." Helen Hunt won best supporting actress and John Hawkes won best actor for his portrayal of a polio survivor who wants to lose his virginity.

The best supporting actor award went to Matthew McConaughey for his role as a male stripper in "Magic Mike."

"I had to take my pants off to win a trophy," McConaughey said.

Now it's on to Oscar Sunday, with some momentum behind "Silver Linings Playbook."
