Jennifer Lawrence's first win at the Oscars will forever be remembered with her big fall. The "Silver Linings Playbook" actress tripped on the stairs as she went up to accept the 2013 Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
During her backstage speech, Lawrence joked about her fall, saying the reason was simple.
"Look at my dress! I tried to walk upstairs in this dress, that's what happened. I think I just stepped on a fabric and they waxed the stairs," Lawrence said. "What went through my mind when I fell down? A bad word that I can't say that starts with F."
Lawrence, who wore a long, pale-pink strapless Dior gown, quickly recovered from the fall as the crowd gave her a standing ovation.
"Thank you," she said. "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell, and that's really embarrassing."
The award marked Lawrence's first Oscar win and second nomination. She beat Naomi Watts of "The Impossible," Jessica Chastain of "Zero Dark Thirty," Quvenhane Wallis, the 9-year-old star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "Amour" actress" Emmanuelle Riva.
In "Silver Linings Playbook," the actress plays a feisty woman named Tiffany who is mourning the death of her husband and is struggling to deal with her loss. She falls in love with main character Pat, played by Bradley Cooper. He is a former teacher and bipolar disorder patient who has been released from a mental institution and wants to reconnect with his ex-wife.
Lawrence said she hopes her Oscar win for "Silver Linings Playbook" will help get rid of the stigma for mental illness.
"I hope that this helps. It's so bizarre how in this world if you have asthma, you take asthma medicine, if you have diabetes, you take diabetes medicine, but as soon as you have to take medication for your mind, there's such a stigma behind it," said Lawrence.
Lawrence is known for playing strong characters and is also known for her starring role as heroine Katniss in the "Hunger Games" films. She earned her first Oscar nomination as well as a Golden Globe nod for her performance in the 2010 film "Winter's Bone." Last month, Lawrence was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook" but lost to Jessica Chastain of "Zero Dark Thirty."
Lawrence drew lots of laughs in the pressroom for her candid responses. Asked whether or not she's worried about peaking too soon in her career at age 22, Lawrence gave a puzzled look and said, "Well now I am!"
"Silver Linings Playbook" was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Cooper and Best Directing for David O. Russell.
