OTRC: Angelina Jolie, Coen brothers team up for 'Unbroken,' WWII survivor drama

Angelina Jolie is reportedly teaming up with Oscar-winning brothers Joel and Ethan Coen for her new film project.

The brothers have been hired to rewrite the script to "Unbroken," a film that is set to be directed by Jolie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is based on a 2010 book by the same name written by Laura Hillenbrand. It tells the story of World War II hero Louis Zamperini.

Zamperini was a high school track star who competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and in 1943, his Air Force plane crashed in the pacific. He survived without food or water for 47 days before washing ashore on a Japanese island where he was held as a prisoner of war and endured torture for two years.

The entertainment industry outlet reports that Jolie signed on as a director for the film in December and was looking for writers for weeks before the Coen brothers signed on.

The film will mark Jolie's second turn in the director's chair. She made her directorial debut with the 2011 movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey." The movie was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film but lost to "A Separation." Jolie also wrote the film.

The Coen brothers often co-write, co-produce and co-direct their films. The two have won a total of four Oscars each. The brothers won three awards in 2008 for "No Country for Old Men," which earned Best Motion Picture, Best Writing(Adapted Screenplay) and Best Achievement in Directing. The two also won Oscars for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen for "Fargo."

Jolie will next appear on screen in the film "Maleficent," which is set for release on July 2, 2014.

The live-action 3D movie explores the origins of Maleficent, an evil sorceress and the main villain in the 1959 Disney animated movie "Sleeping Beauty." Jolie's youngest daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, will be making her big screen debut in the film.
