The Wilshire Boulevard off-ramp on the southbound 405 Freeway is set to close Friday and remain closed for two weeks.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. The closure is necessary so the old ramp can be demolished and the new ramp can be built along the widened stretch of the 405 Freeway.

The reconstructed ramp is slated to open by 6 a.m. Friday, March 22. However, this final date may change depending on weather and daily progress.

Commuters will have to take a detour route and take the Santa Monica Boulevard exit eastbound to Sepulveda Boulevard to Wilshire Boulevard. To see the detour route map, visit www.metro.net.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the reconstructed Wilshire ramp will improve local traffic by reducing conflicts between Wilshire Boulevard and the 405 Freeway. This is expected to cut backups at other north and south streets.

Also, Metro says the new ramps will have higher capacity and be seismically updated.

This project is part of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project, which aims to create a 10-mile HOV lane along the 405 Freeway from the 10 to the 101.
