Check out 5 facts about Bell's palsy, according to the National Institutes of Health.

1. What is it?

In a person suffering from Bell's palsy, the facial nerve, located in the skull under the ears, stops functioning properly, resulting in weakness or a paralysis in their face, usually on one side.

2. What causes it?

Many experts believe a viral infection can spur the ailment.

3. Who is prone to contracting it?

People of both genders between ages 15 and 60 are most likely to contract it, espcially if they have diabetes or upper respiratory illnesses. Wilson, who has battled with her weight for years and underwent two weight loss surgeries, discovered in 2011 that she was borderline diabetic.

4. What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include impaired speech, dizziness and difficulty in consuming food or drink. They sometimes subside within a couple of weeks without treatment.

5. What are the treatments?

Wilson is doing the right thing -- acupuncture is among the possible treatments for Bell's palsy, which also include medications such as steroids and over-the-counter pain relievers.
