Kate Winslet has been cast in the upcoming film adaptation of the young adult novel "Divergent," the book's author, Veronica Roth, confirmed on Thursday, March 21.
"Okay, so you may have seen/heard rumors of this already, so it's not exactly new news, but it is Officially Official, which means that I can tell you my thoughts. KATE WINSLET has been cast as Jeanine Matthews," Roth wrote.
"What can I say? When I found out, I was floored. I grew up watching Kate Winslet in movies, whether it was 'Titanic' or 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' or 'The Reader,' and she is an incredible actress, and I am sure that she will be extraordinary as Jeanine," she added. "I'm excited to see the complexity and depth she'll bring to the role."
"Divergent" is the first in the series of three young adult novels written by Roth. It tells the story of Beatrice, a girl living in a dystopian version of Chicago. In the book, humanity has divided itself into five "factions" and Jeanine Matthews is the leader of the Erudites, a faction who seeks to acquire all knowledge.
Beatrice, who later becomes known as Tris, is born into the Abnegation faction, also known as "the Selfless," and she seeks to become a member of the Dauntless faction, also known as "the Brave." The other two factions include Candor (the Honest) and Amity (the Peaceful).
Summit Entertainment, the same studio behind the film adaptations of "The Twilight Saga" series, is the studio behind the film. The second novel in the series, called "Insurgent," was released in May 2012 and the third book, which is still untitled, is expected to be released on October 22.
E! News has previously reported that "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and "The Descendants" actress Shailene Woodley has been cast as Beatrice in the film and "Golden Boy" actor Theo James has been cast as Tobias Eaton, also known as "Four" in the book. "Four" is Beatrice's love interest.
"Divergent" is set for release on March 21, 2014.
