When Zendaya Coleman performs her "prom night" number next week on "Dancing With The Stars," it will be dedicated to her biggest fan -- her grandmother, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
"Her grandma was a huge, huge fan of the show, and a huge influence in her life," Zendaya's dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy told OTRC after the first elimination episode. "She was diagnosed with breast cancer literally the day after our premiere."
The 27-year-old dancer went on to reveal how the emotional news prompted Zendaya's mother to approach him with a special request.
"Her mom approached me two days after that and was like, 'Listen. Zendaya never went to prom ... Can we, instead, just dedicate it to her grandma? She's a huge fan, and she would love that and [it] would make her feel better."
In response, Chmerkovskiy and Zendaya, who at age 16 is too young to have attended her own high school prom, have choreographed their upcoming dance to honor the sick woman. Even Zendaya's wardrobe will be a symbolic gesture.
"We're building everything around her experience when [her grandmother] was that age, we're taking it back to that time," Chmerkovskiy said. "We're creating a dress that is a copy of the dress that... her grandma wore to prom."
Prom night at "Dancing With The Stars" will air on Monday, April 1 at 8 p.m. ET.
