John Mayer has confirmed his recent reported breakup with fellow singer Katy Perry, telling Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show that "coupling is a tricky thing."
The 35-year-old and Perry, 28, had largely kept out of the spotlight while dating over the past seven months but had attended several public events together, such as President Barack Obama's inauguration. On a recent episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the talk show host old Mayer that she last saw him was at the Grammys, when he and Perry sat in the same row as her and wife Portia de Rossi.
"And I know that since then, you're not together anymore," the talk show host said.
"Correct," he replied.
He and Perry were reported to have called it quits in March. She has not commented.
"Listen, it was a very private relationship going in, it was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship still and I kind of understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given but I finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other," Mayer told DeGeneres.
"I've been much happier since then," he said. "I'm on the same journey as everyone else ... coupling is a tricky thing. It's a tricky thing. "
Mayer, who lives in Montana, has been spotted in recent weeks out and about in Los Angeles. He appears to be keeping a low profile, hanging out with comedian friends at the World Famous Comedy Store, where he has sometimes been brought on stage as a surprise guest.
Mayer is currently preparing for his "Born and Raised" tour. Audience members who attended the taping of his interview with DeGeneres were given free tickets to a California show.
