"I just came from Bakersfield and it's starting to pick up," said truck driver Bob Baumann on Saturday night. "If you go through the canyons, it really funnels through there and gets pretty bad."
Earlier in the day, the high winds whipped up trouble in the Antelope Valley. Blowing dust and sand created near whiteout conditions at times, making driving treacherous.
Gusts of 60 to 80 mph were expected in the Los Angeles and Ventura county mountains, and 50 to 60 mph in the Santa Clarita Valley and Santa Monica mountains from Saturday to Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.
The NWS said the gusty winds may be strong enough to down power lines, trees and large tree limbs, and will cause dangerous cross winds on area roadways, especially for high-profile vehicles. Winds are expected to start dying down late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
