Rachel McAdams said her local grocer in Toronto had her try an unorthodox cure for her insomnia: Marijuana. However, the actress said she had an unpleasant experience while on the drug and started to hallucinate.
McAdams was a guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Monday, April 8. She told Kimmel that she had a great grocer who would always had "a little something special" for her, like a bottle of exclusive maple syrup from Quebec. She went on to describe one time where her grocer tried to help her out with her insomnia.
"We were chatting and I said I was having a really hard time sleeping and he said, 'Well, um, I've got something for you," McAdams told Kimmel. "I was like, 'Oh, OK' and he takes me to the back and he pulls out this little bottle with no label. It's full of this dark green substance and he lifts [the lid] and said, 'Take a whiff of that.'"
"And it's like ... it's ... well it's, it's marijuana," the 34-year-old actress added, getting laugh from Kimmel. "And I was like, 'Oh, oh no, no, no, no, no. I want to sleep, I don't want to get high.'"
McAdams said the grocer insisted that the substance was just going to put her to sleep and "not get you high." However, the actress said shortly after agreeing to try the substance, she took "the tiniest teaspoon" of it at home before bed, brushed her teeth and "by the time I'm getting into bed I'm like, my brain, what's happening?"
"I was not thinking normal, human thoughts," McAdams said. "I was hallucinating. I was totally hallucinating and I'm just laying there like cursing him, 'I can't believe this is happening!'"
"And then I started to hear opera. And then for like five hours I heard opera, this guy singing opera in my head," the actress added. "I was going crazy."
McAdams said she later talked to the grocer about the outcome and told him she was upset with him and that it didn't work.
The actress told Kimmel, "He's like, 'Oh it didn't put you to sleep?'And then I realized, I really looked at him, and his eyes were this big [she squints] and I was like, 'You're a stoner!'"
Kimmel then quipped, "So this is that Canadian healthcare we hear so much about!"
McAdams appeared on the program to promote her upcoming film "To The Wonder." The movie stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko and Javier Bardem and was directed by Terrence Malick. It hits theaters on April 12.
