OTRC: Bradley Cooper: Why I live with mom, a 'cool chick' (Video)

Bradley Cooper walks the red carpet with his mother at the 2013 Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Bradley Cooper's roommate of two years is a "cool chick" ... and also happens to be his mom.

The 38-year-old Oscar nominee talked about his mother in an interview published in Details magazine's May 2013 issue, which features him on the actor. Cooper described how he and his mom, Gloria, were there for each other after her husband and his father, Charles, passed away in 2011 at age 71.

"The best way I can answer that is to say we're surviving. Both of us," Cooper said. "Let's face it: It's probably not easy for her, by the way, to be living with her son. It's life. And right now, two years after my father's death, this is where we are. My family is very close, and my dad dying was brutal for all of us. It was a schism, and its aftershock has not stopped. And we need each other. So here we are."

"But don't get me wrong. It's not without complications," he added. "It's not like I live in a compound and she's in the guesthouse. No. She's in the next room. But here's the thing: She's a cool chick. We can hang, and she can roll with the punches. If that wasn't the case, there's no way."

The actor, who also has a sister, has often taken Gloria to red carpet premieres and also brought her as his date to the 2013 Oscars, when he was nominated for a Best Leading Actor award for his role in "Silver Linings Playbook." He lost to Daniel Day-Lewis of "Lincoln."

"I love having her"

Cooper has talked about his mother and father, who had died after battling lung cancer, in interviews before.

He told Esquire magazine in 2011 that he moved back in with his parents in his hometown of Philadelphia for the final five months of his dad's life and took him to an Eagles playoff game six days before he died. Gloria later moved into the actor's home in Los Angeles. Cooper lives in a $4.7 million 3-bedroom house in Pacific Palisades, a posh coastal neighborhood.

"I love having her," Cooper told Esquire at the time. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

The actor, who now wears Charles' wedding ring, told British GQ in an April 2013 interview that he was at his father's bedside during his final hours.

"My father gave me two gifts - having me and dying with me," he said. "I used to be the kid that got the shakes if I had to talk in public; now, I just don't get nervous about stuff. I can't control everything. I watched my father die and I realized that is the way we are all going to die. For me, it was a switch from knowing something intellectually to knowing it by tangibly experiencing it. It rewired my neurological system."

"One of the first people I called when my father died, for example, was Zach [Galifianakis]," he added. "We were on the phone laughing and crying at the same time."

Cooper is currently promoting the film "The Hangover Part III," in which he reprises his role as Phil (Watch the trailer, above.) In the movie, Alan, played by Zach Galifianakis, loses his father and his wolfpack buddies support him and take him to a hospital to seek counseling. They are assaulted on the way there and Doug, played by Justin Bartha, is kidnapped. The movie hits theaters on May 24.
