5 snowboarders killed in Colo. avalanche identified

DENVER

Christopher Peters, 32, Joseph Timlin, 32, Ryan Novack, 33, Ian Lanphere, 36, and Rick Gaukel, 33, were killed in an avalanche Saturday in the Loveland Pass of Georgetown.

A sixth rider, who has not been identified, survived and was able to call for help. Search and rescue crews recovered the bodies several hours later.

Authorities say the riders may have triggered the slide. Officials say the avalanche was about 600 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

The slide happened on a weekend when many people are taking advantage of the late season snowfall in the Rocky Mountains.
