Camarillo brush fire grows to 2,000+ acres; mandatory evacuations ordered

A brush fire broke out near the 101 Freeway in Camarillo Thursday morning has grown to more than 1,000 acres, forcing residents to flee from the area.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for the Dos Vientos area and for Cal State University Channels Islands.

The fire started around 6:45 a.m. near the Camarillo Springs Road exit and was burning quickly in steep terrain.

Officials said 200 firefighters were at the scene and additional crews were expected to be called in to fight the flames from the air and the ground.

Two right lanes on the southbound 101 Freeway were shut down near Camarillo Springs Road. Major traffic was reported in the area.
