'Unreported' sailboat located in Honoloulu - Coast Guard

LONG BEACH, Calif.

The 44-foot "Siesta" was found nearly 500 miles northeast of Honolulu, the Coast Guard said in a statement Sunday. The crew was not in distress.

The Siesta crew blamed a malfunction in their satellite phone as the reason why they had not been able to make contact since Saturday.

Lt. Kevin Cooper with the Coast Guard suggested early on there may have been problems with the boat's communications equipment.

"People set up a communication plan with somebody to say they will check in one or two times a day, and this vessel hasn't made their check in. So in Coast Guard terms, we consider it unreported," Cooper said.

The crew was sailing to Long Beach in preparation for the Transpacific Honolulu Race that's coming up in July. The boat will now continue on to California.
