After spending the bulk of 2013 as a brunette, Demi Lovato has gone back to blonde. The singer showed off her new hairstyle while being honored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on Tuesday, May 7.

According to a statement from SAMHSA, the singer was honored "for her work as a mentor to young adults with mental health and substance use challenges." The 20-year-old received an award from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day press event held in Washington, D.C.

"Every young person faces challenges as they work toward becoming an independent adult, and for those with mental health challenges, it can be even more of a struggle," Lovato said in a statement. "I want those young adults to know that your life has meaning and you can reach out to someone you trust for support and overcome any challenges in your life."

Sebelius also Tweeted a photo of herself and Lovato at the event and wrote in the Tweet, "Thank you @ddlovato for sharing your story, being a leader on bringing mental health out of the shadows."

Lovato ReTweeted Sebelius and later wrote, "Honored to receive an award from @Sebelius + appear w/5 brave ppl sharing their resilience stories."

The singer has been open about her struggles with substance abuse, anorexia and bipolar disorder in the past. In 2010, Lovato dropped out of a series of concerts with the Jonas Brothers to seek treatment. She gave several candid media interviews and bounced back into the spotlight with an album and a successful run as a judge on "The X Factor."

Lovato, who will return as a mentor on "The X Factor" next season, is now gearing up for the release of her new album "Demi" and recently gave her fans an early opportunity to listen to the album earlier this week.

"Demi" is set to be released on May 14. On April 18, the album's first single, "Heart Attack," was certified Gold by the RIAA after selling over 500,000 copies since its debut on February 25.
