Jeanne Cooper, an actress known for playing Katherine Chancellor for nearly 40 years on "The Young and the Restless," died on Wednesday, May 8, at the age of 84.
The actress' son, actor Corbin Bernsen, broke the news on his official Facebook page on Wednesday. A spokesperson for CBS, which airs "The Young and the Restless," confirmed the actress' death to The Associated Press as well.
"Wasn't sure how I would have to say these words so I opt for simplicity at least to begin...My mother passed away this morning just a short time ago, peaceful with my sister by her side, in her sleep," Bernsen, 58, wrote on Facebook.
"I was going to visit this afternoon, thought I had time. Reminder to self - time is a precious thing. I too am at peace however. I said my goodbyes several times over during the last few weeks," he added. "I'll go one last time now for a gentle kiss a final farewell for this lifetime."
Cooper was hospitalized in April with an undisclosed illness. Bernsen had been chronicling his mother's health, giving updates to fans with photos, since then. He wrote on April 16, "While we are far from done with this - and I've been told to be cautious in my thinking that - the hurdles that have been jumped by my mom, fueled by your prayers and well wishes and love, support so much of what I've come to believe and have been trying to share in the last few years."
Cooper joined the cast of "The Young and the Restless," in November 1973 and she was the longest-tenured cast member, according to the AP. The actress earned 11 Daytime Emmy nominations for the role and she won a Daytime Emmy for best actress in a drama series in 2008.
The actress was born in Taft, Calif., in 1928. She performed in local theater productions before she began her professional career in the 1953 film "The Redhead from Wyoming." Her other film credits include "The Boston Strangler" and "Tony Rome."
Cooper also had a recurring role on "L.A. Law" where she played the mother to Bersen's character, Arnie.
Cooper's 30-year marriage to Harry Bernsen ended in divorce in 1977. The couple have three children, Corbin, Caren and Collin, and eight grandchildren.
