The Mirror Ball Trophy is looking for a good home! And to earn the honor of taking home that statue of mirror and rhinestones, our four remaining celebrities had to perform three dances each.
Jacoby Jones, Kellie Pickler, Alexandra Raisman and Zendaya have each been assigned one routine in a dance style that the judges wanted to see again. They also tag-teamed in the breathless Cha Cha Relay; and then the dance we've all grown to love the most ... Freestyle!
And along with the dancing, kudos to class act Tom Bergeron for making a very heartfelt and appropriate acknowledgement to the real life devastation happening in the Midwest.
Here's a rundown of Monday night's dances, from highest score to lowest:
Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy - 30 out 30 for their Samba routine / 5 bonus points from Cha Cha Relay / 30 out of 30 for their Freestyle routine / Total = 65 out of 65
It seems a little awkward to ask a 16-year-old to be sexier. But that's exactly what Zendaya needed to be in order to nail the Samba. Ever the actress, she channels her inner hip-shaking diva and hits triple 10's with Val Chmerkovskiy's tough choreography. She also hit Val during dress rehearsal and he's sporting a nasty cut on the right side of his face. THAT'S going to leave a mark!
Zendaya and Val and his stitches won the Cha Cha Relay -- five bonus points. The whole thing was a little pointless. But I guess it filled time until the Freestyle!
Zendaya knew everyone was expecting her to go straight up Hip-Hop for the final routine but she wanted to also showcase how much she's learned. Val blended lots of different styles and then adds a group of pint-sized dancers to put the exclamation point on a fun, fast moving Freestyle.
Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough - 30 out 30 for their Quickstep routine / 4 bonus points from Cha Cha Relay / 30 out of 30 for their Freestyle routine / Total = 64 out of 65
Apparently back when Kellie and Derek Hough did the Quickstep before the judges were annoyed by their lack of connectivity. So they get the chance to redeem themselves. Len Goodman pops into rehearsal to help show just what the problem was the first time; apparently it has to do with basic anatomy and boy parts and girl parts. Only in England, they say it has to do with your "wobbly bits."
The bits problem was fixed, and perfection achieved! But if we're going to talk about perfection, we have to talk about Kellie's Freestyle. I'm pretty sure if you looked perfection up in the dictionary you'd see this as an example. Rather than throw out all kinds of bells and whistles and lights and explosions, Derek just choreographed a dance. A dance that was so tough it looked simple and a dance that showed how these two have formed an incredible bond. Carrie Ann Inaba was in tears; and Len gave them a standing ovation.
Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas - 28 out 30 for their Samba routine / 3 bonus points from Cha Cha Relay / 30 out of 30 for their Freestyle routine / Total = 61 out of 65
On judges' orders, the gymnast also steps out with a sultry Samba. She was still a little green and reserved the first time she tried the dance. Ten weeks later, Aly lets it all out on the dance floor and looks like she is having fun! Bruno Tonioli stops by to request that Mark Ballas put in a few of the tougher Samba dance moves (and also to show off his biceps).
The judges all praised the couple for showing improvement from their first Samba go-round. For the freestyle round, Aly's lucky she has Mark as her partner because in the past he's been known to push all the boundaries ... and he does it again. He flips her gymnastic uneven bars on their side and they do a futuristic pole dance. Yes, pole dance. But it works! The judges are thrilled with the imagination shown and give them a perfect score.
Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff - 27 out 30 for their Jive routine / 2 bonus points from Cha Cha Relay / 27 out of 30 for their Freestyle routine / Total = 56 out of 65
Jacoby's do-over dance was the Jive. The judges thought he could do better than his original. And to help, a little visit from Len! Who knew the key to perfecting the Jive was to pretend you are kicking peanuts off the floor? Thank you Dance master!
Karina and Jacoby do a fun and fast moving routine, but not one that would knock your socks off. Brooke Burke asked Jacoby what it would take for him to win and he quickly quipped "The Grace of God." Yup, you got that right. Jacoby and Karina pay tribute to his hometown of New Orleans with a good time, party themed routine for their Freestyle. They get high marks for the theme but their dance steps weren't quite all there.
Tuesday night we'll see one couple go home early; the remaining three will dance one more time for the judges. And then ... a new owner of the Mirror Ball!
