Blake Shelton told reporters after "The Voice" on Tuesday, May 21, that he is planning a benefit for the Oklahoma tornado victims with NBC.
"We are actually putting together a fund-raiser right now with NBC. We'll have more details within the next 24 hours, but definitely something with NBC that is going to happen real fast, and hopefully raise a lot of money," Shelton, an Oklahoma native, told CNN.
According to The Associated Press, Shelton said the benefit would be held soon in nearby Oklahoma City. The wire service reports that at least 24 people were killed Monday afternoon in Moore, Okla., after an F-5 tornado with 200 mph winds touched down for 40 minutes.
Shelton revealed to CNN that his sister once lived near Moore, but had moved recently.
"I spent three Christmases at my sister's house in Moore, Okla., and some of those helicopter views of the destruction, you could see her house a quarter of a mile away from there," Shelton told CNN.
He added, "My nieces and nephews would have gone to that school (Plaza Towers Elementary), and when you start putting it in that sort of perspective, and then thinking, 'Oh my God, I am so glad that they recently moved away from that area.' And then you go, 'What about all those people that didn't?' It's hard to put into words, honestly."
Shelton paid tribute to the victims affected by the tornado on "The Voice" on Tuesday by performing an acoustic version of "Over You" with wife Miranda Lambert. The two co-wrote the song for Lambert's 2012 album "Four the Record" as a tribute to Shelton's brother, who died when Shelton was a teen. Their performance can be seen below.
Shelton and Lambert initially met backstage at CMT's 100 Greatest Duets Concert in 2005. He and Lambert performed the song "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma" at the concert and during her 2011 episode of "Behind The Music," Lambert admitted the two had instant chemistry. The couple wed in May 2011. Video from the episode can be viewed below.
Toby Keith, who is a native of Moore, is also planning a benefit. His sister's house was hit by the tornado, according to the AP.
